Have you seen the Tunnels to Towers commercials? Of course you have. They’re on TV all the time, asking for money to support our veterans. They’re high quality productions and sometimes even feature very famous people. They must cost a fortune and, in my opinion, are worth every penny because there’s no group of people more deserving of our money than our veterans. My husband is one. I’m all for government, church, and personal funding of our United States veterans and their families. They’re instrumental in securing and maintaining our freedom, and they’ve earned it.
But what about the kids in the HUGS for Tomorrow program? What about the 180 children who make up the campus in Malawi, Africa? They come, in many cases, from broken, poverty stricken homes, where they’ve not been educated or properly nourished. They’re not always attractive or especially talented, and they don’t always do well in school. They don’t even say thank you or pray for the people who support their education unless we tell them to. Basically, they offer nothing.
So, why do they deserve your support? They don’t. But, I’m asking for it anyway. In fact, I’m asking for it especially, because if you don’t help them, who will? Undeserving people don’t get much attention in this world, and we’re asking you to look their way.
Here are a few Scriptures that share God’s own heart on the subject of the least deserving:
James 1:27, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”
Proverbs 19:17, “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.”
Matthew 18:10, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.”
For this Giving Tuesday I want to ask on behalf of the 180 children in our program that you please make a donation to HUGS for Tomorrow. We admit they don’t deserve your hard earned money, but please consider what He has done for you and pay it forward. “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” Titus 3:5.
Thank you, Jesus, for giving us all what we don’t deserve and for the generous hearts that allow us to care for 180 of the world’s poorest children in Malawi, Africa. Your will be done. Amen.
